A new study reveals that a new class of COX-2 inhibitors, such as Celebrex, may help relieve heartburn symptoms, particularly when co-administered with a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) like Propecia or other similar drugs.
Aspirin, known generically as aspirin, has been linked to heartburn symptoms. It was also linked to the release of the COX-2 inhibitor indomethacin, which is also sold as naproxen.
Celebrex and CeleX, which are in a class of medicines called COX-2 inhibitors, have been shown to relieve symptoms of arthritis, back pain and other pain.
The FDA approved Celebrex in 2002 after a large study found that people taking an active form of the drug did more harm than good.
The study, which involved 3,700 people with arthritis, arthritis-related pain, arthritis-related joint pain, and more, was published this month in the New England Journal of Medicine.
"It's important to note that although they are all COX-2 inhibitors, they all work in the same way," said Dr. William C. Ricks, professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School.
The study also involved people taking a placebo for arthritis-related joint pain, who also took an active COX-2 inhibitor.
In the current study, people who took the placebo had a significantly lower incidence of arthritis-related joint pain than people who took a placebo.
People taking a placebo also had a lower incidence of osteoarthritis-related joint pain than those taking the placebo.
Celebrex and CeleX are also used to treat arthritis in older people. It is only licensed in some countries, including the United States, where it is used off-label to treat arthritis.
Researchers are unsure if Celebrex is an effective treatment for heartburn. It may not be the best treatment for people who already have heartburn.
Both studies were conducted in the U. S., and participants were randomly assigned to take a COX-2 inhibitor or placebo for three months. The study was published in May 2006.
In the U. S., the researchers analyzed data from a large, randomized, controlled trial comparing celecoxib (Celebrex) with a placebo. Celebrex, a COX-2 inhibitor, and a placebo were given twice daily for three months.
The study participants were randomized to take a placebo for three months or celecoxib for two months. The results showed that celecoxib was safe for people with heartburn. However, the researchers noted that the participants had a higher incidence of gastrointestinal bleeding than people taking placebo.
The study also included people taking an active COX-2 inhibitor or placebo for more than two years. They did not use a dosing device or other measures to monitor people closely for gastrointestinal bleeding.
S., the researchers analyzed data from a larger, controlled trial comparing ibuprofen (Advil) with a placebo. They also analyzed data from a randomized controlled trial comparing naproxen with celecoxib, which was used to treat arthritis.
S., the researchers also looked at data from the trial between May and June 2004.
A total of 784 people were randomized to take an active COX-2 inhibitor or placebo for three months.
Overall, people taking an active COX-2 inhibitor were more likely to have gastrointestinal bleeding than people taking a placebo. People taking an active COX-2 inhibitor also were less likely to have heartburn symptoms than people taking a placebo.
The study also found that celecoxib and naproxen were effective in relieving heartburn.
Celebrex and CeleX are currently the only two COX-2 inhibitors licensed for heartburn. But more are being developed, and more are being studied. The new COX-2 inhibitors could be used in patients with heartburn and other conditions as well.
Celebrex has been linked to a risk of stomach ulcers, though the drug has not been tested in people with stomach ulcers. The Food and Drug Administration has approved a new drug for arthritis, Celebrex, to treat arthritis pain. The study also included people taking a placebo for arthritis-related joint pain, who also took an active COX-2 inhibitor.
